The Genuardi Family Foundation Scholarship (in Honor of the Genuardi Brothers)

The Genuardi Family Foundation believes that creating opportunities for students to excel academically prepares them for success in their careers and lives, so that they may be inspired to enrich their own communities. Thus, it is with pride that the Foundation annually partners with Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing to fund three (3) two-year scholarships to sophomores pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Food Marketing.

Scholarship History at Genuardi’s Family Markets

In 1990, when the nine third generation Genuardi cousins purchased the Genuardi Family Markets business from their fathers (the “Genuardi Brothers”), they wanted to honor their parent’s hard work that afforded them such great opportunities for success. The most important of these privileges was education.

The cousins created The Genuardi Brothers’ Scholarship, originally comprised of five $2,000 grants awarded to eligible employees of Genuardi’s Family Markets. Over the next decade, the  program grew to 10 $2,500 awards. The program was extremely well received, and over a 13-year period, more than 100 scholarships were awarded to Genuardi’s Family Markets’ employees.

Scholarship’s History at the Academy of Food Marketing

Once family members sold the business to Safeway and formed the Genuardi Family Foundation, they sought a way to continue their support of academic achievement through a targeted scholarship program. The Foundation’s partnership with Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing (AFM) was a natural next step.

In 2004, the scholarship opportunity was offered to AFM students for the first time.  Each year, a grant from the Foundation funds three (3) two-year scholarships to sophomores pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Food Marketing. Since its inception, scholarships have been awarded to 51 exceptional AFM students totaling $890,000.

The scholarship process is fully administered by Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing, including application review, student interviews, and scholarship recipient selection. Application materials are housed on the Academy of Food Marketing website.

The 2023 scholarship cycle has closed.
